Q:
What is the difference between a smoke alarm and an audible alarm?
I am wondering what the difference between an audible alarm and a smoke alarm. Do you know a difference, any advantages or disadvantages to one versus the other?
A:
Here's an example from the article Smoke Alarms, State and Local Laws.
The thing to keep in mind when selecting an alarm is the false alarm rate. False alarms are also known as nuisance alarms. In the example from the article, the fire department says that they are dealing with a business where people know the location of the fire alarm and are avoiding the response and waiting for the fire department.
They determine the false alarm rate by sending a crew to that location, testing the alarm, and keeping track of the results.
According to the article, as long as it meets the requirements, it's as good as the other option.
A:
In general, an audible alarm is a siren or bell that emits a continuous tone or sequence of sounds that increase in frequency and duration as the alarm level increases.
A fire-detector with an audible alarm is typically a fire detector that is also a siren or bell that is built into a base or fixture and is mounted to the ceiling, so that it may be found and activated more easily.
Both options have their advantages and disadvantages. The first advantage of an audible alarm is that it can provide the best possible early warning of a fire condition, allowing occupants to escape. As a downside, the constant sounds can be disconcerting, especially if they are combined with flashing lights.
On the other hand, a fire-detector with an audible alarm provides not only early warning, but a visual indication to those in the building, and an additional visual indication to those outside the building. For this reason, some fire-detector installations include both a visual alarm (i.e., a strobe light) and an audible alarm, giving building occupants a single, easy-to-see signal to indicate a fire condition. Good story and some good descriptive lines. Her family history is from the creation of Israel, and an anti-semite named Josepha Nimmo, who was part of the Irish Fenian Brotherhood was the mother of her father. They were once neighbors. She came to the realization that her father had practiced Dark Magick, and finally began to attend the University of Kansas, where he was also a professor of English literature. She studied Law and got a job at the Department of Justice, which is where she met her future husband. After her divorce, she decided to pursue her real passion - which was writing. The scene begins with her sitting in the kitchen watching her father preparing for a huge party. She is at the age where she has to take over the management of the household, and her mother is not helpful in that regard. There is a lot of funny dialogue between mother and daughter.
During the scene, there is a knock at the door, and as mother opens it, who should be standing there but a huge woman in a tight red dress who is the guest of honor at the party. She is greeted by the host. The two women talk about how to handle the situation. Let me just mention that in this story, mother does not have any clear age-appropriate attractions to the guest, but she is also aware that the guest is several years older than her. As the guest stands in the living room, daughter reads some embarrassing letters from her childhood. As mother and daughter discuss the guest, daughter sees that the guest is smoking on the sofa and she wonders if she can smoke. Father says that she should not do that, but mother sees that it will not be a problem if she has a drink. The scene ends with father and daughter going to the kitchen to clean up.
